  • Materials Manager

    Bakersfield, CA

    The Materials Manager is in essence responsible for the planning, procurement, storage, control, and distribution of parts and materials, while synchronizing all purchasing, inventory management, costing and quality assurance activities within budget guidelines and in compliance with generally accepted accounting principles.

    Primary Duties of a Materials Manager:

    • Collects material/part requirements and requisitions from the maintenance and operations departments
    • Performs market surveys and analysis of parts/materials costs and prices – searches for the best prices in the market and potential vendors who can supply the required amount of quality products on time and within budget parameters
    • Coordinates and negotiates with the vendors for prices and procurement – formulates contracts and releases/places order for materials/parts and makes sure that orders are delivered on time, to the specified locations and within budget
    • Organizes and supervises shipping and receiving of the materials/parts to ensure that they complete, not defective, short or otherwise compromised items. Expedites when needed.
    • Maintains records of all stock and keeps inventory control – organizes inventory physically and systematically, directs regular cycle counts, produces monthly inventory reports and oversees annual physical
    • Manages mins and maxes, out-of-stock, over-stock, negative on-hands,  and inventory turn
    • Maintains standard and quality of parts and materials
    • Controls data integrity and updates inventory descriptions, codes, costs and other field identifiers in database system as needed
    • Validates and prepares PO-Receiver-Invoice documents, codes, approves and submits to accounting department on-time and completely for proper recording and payment processing
    • Operationalizes budget. Tracks and reports spending to budget, oversees and monitors cost savings programs, explains any variances to budget
    • Participate in meetings with the accounting, maintenance, safety and operations departments
    • Provide training and direction to junior employees
    • Field questions and requests of management, vendors, business partners and other affiliates

    Skills Required by Materials Manager:

    • Should have good negotiating skills and verbal and written communication skills
    • Skillful in planning and analyzing the requirements of the maintenance, operations, safety and other company departments
    • Ability to determine required specifications
    • Skilled at researching the market, looking for potential suppliers and designing quotations for the purchase order
    • Well-versed with the traditional as well as advanced methods used in inventory control
    • Mechanically inclined and hands-on
    • Proficient in using computer, printers, copy machines, etc.

    Educational Requirements for Materials Manager:

    Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration with specialization in Logistics, Material Management or Supply Chain Management.
